FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

REASONS FOR PROCESSING SEMEN?

There are many different reasons why having semen frozen can beneficial to the Breeder.
(1) Genetic distribution for obtaining genetic proofs for dairy bulls.
(2) Convenience of breeding animals at different family farm locations.
(3) Preserving genes from special cow families to be reintroduced in later years.
(4) Safety, large bulls can be very hazardous to keep on the farm without proper bull housing facilities.

WHAT QUANTITY CAN I EXPECT?

The amount of straws or units that can be processed varies a great deal. The determining factors are breed, size, age, physical condition, health, quality of sperm cells and whether the tease animal is in heat. However, it is reasonable to assume a one year old dairy bull will normally produce between 150 and 250 units. The changes in maturity of the bulls from 11-15 months of age is very great and the semen quality and quantity change very rapidly. The determination of the exact amount of units is made after I have the ejaculates in the warming block and check the density and motility of the semen.

HOW ABOUT QUALITY ASSURANCE?

Each ejaculate is evaluated for quality traits such as volume, density of sperm cells, color and smell, percent motility of healthy normal cells and the rate of activity of the sperm cells. After semen is frozen, some straws are selected at random and thawed in a 95 degree water bath and checked for quality of the semen after it is thawed.
